On 17 November 2022, Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya Disputes honoured Professor Emmanuel Gaillard at the second edition of its annual Emmanuel Gaillard Lecture.

The Rt Hon. the Lord Hoffmann delivered this second lecture, entitled “The Efficacy of the Law.”

Lord Hoffman examined the practical implications of the UK Supreme Court’s recent decision in Enka v Chubb [2020] UKSC and compared it to the House of Lords’ decision in Fiona Trust & Holding v Privalov [2007] UKHL 40, for which he wrote the leading judgment. Lord Hoffman also considered Prof. Gaillard’s contributions to legal efficacy.

The evening, hosted at the symbolic Le Cercle de l’Union Interalliée in Paris, gathered close to 100 guests and included tributes by Dr Yas Banifatemi and Mr Mohamad Shelbaya.

Judge Dominique Hascher delivered the first lecture in 2021.
