He advises and represents companies, State-owned entities and States in commercial and investment arbitrations. His experience includes arbitrations conducted in accordance with the rules of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), the Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit (DIS), the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center (HKIAC).

His industry experience includes matters in the mining and metals, telecom, oil and gas, maritime, pharmaceuticals and financial sectors.

INCLUDES REPRESENTATION OF:

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. in an ICSID arbitration against the Kingdom of Sweden in relation to a number of measures taken by the Swedish authorities directly targeting Huawei’s investments in Sweden and excluding Huawei from the roll-out of 5G network products and services in the country.
Georgia, Respondent, in an SCC arbitration initiated by Mr. Zaza Okuashvili under the Georgia-U.K. bilateral investment treaty. The dispute relates to taxes owed to the State by various companies owned by the Claimant.
An African shipping company in an ad hoc arbitration in London arising in connection with various charterparties purportedly entered into since 2007. The case concerns allegations of grand corruption and kleptocracy at the highest levels in an African State.
A Middle Eastern national oil company in several interrelated disputes including disputes concerning (i) the quantities of refined products to which our client is entitled under an offtake and sales agreement, (ii) its shareholding rights in the company which owns the refinery as well as (iii) its rights and liability as a guarantor of the company towards the company’s lenders. The law of the Middle Eastern State applies to the first and the second disputes. The law of a European State applies to the third dispute. Over USD 500 million is globally at stake.
Two subsidiaries of a North American mining and metals company in seven LCIA arbitrations in London against a European trading firm. The dispute related to the performance of various contracts for the sale and purchase of metal concentrates. English law applied.
A subsidiary of Sonangol in an LCIA arbitration in London against a European holding company beneficially owned by Isabel dos Santos. The dispute related to high-profile allegations of embezzlement, corruption and money-laundering and to the management and dissolution of a consortium for offshore gas exploration. English and Angolan law applied. The proceedings were terminated after the claims against Sonangol’s subsidiary were withdrawn.
Sonangol E.P., Respondent, in an NAI arbitration in Amsterdam against a European holding company beneficially owned by Isabel dos Santos. The dispute related to high-profile allegations of embezzlement, corruption and money-laundering in relation to a joint venture agreement. Dutch and Angolan law applied.
A European life sciences company, Respondent in an arbitration brought by a European chemical company seeking indemnification under a Share Purchase Agreement. The law of the Claimant’s State applied.
A private equity fund and its founder in ICC and HKIAC arbitrations initiated by the fund’s general partner and an alleged investor in the fund, as well as in related domestic court proceedings in multiple jurisdictions. The arbitrations each concerned ownership of various entities in the fund structure. Hong Kong and Cayman Islands law applied.

Advisory

Representing an energy company in (i) the negotiation and drafting of agreements/treaties for the import of gas produced in Eastern Mediterranean gas fields, its transportation through a network of marine pipelines to be created, its treatment and liquefaction and its export as LNG and (ii) the settlement of associated disputes between LNG buyers and the energy company.
